ELECTROMAGNETIC WORKING GROUP plan of activity for 2014 =======================================

1) Multi-threading for EM physics

  • further cleanup of EM code for MT (1)
  • clarify and fix behavior of EM options in MT and sequential mode (1)
  • migration remaining EM examples to multi-threading (1/2)
  • migration of testing suite to multi-threading (1/2) (*)

2) Validation and verification of EM physics

  • perform regular execution and regression analysis using existing testing suites (1/2)
  • continue detailed comparison of Standard, Livermore and Penelope models [LE] (1/2)
  • validation of Geant4 for design studies on future colliders (2)
  • restart testing of backward scattering (1)
  • add CALICE calorimeter tests, focusing on lateral shape (2) (*)
  • add Cerenkov calorimeter test (2) (*)
  • add bremsstrahlung benchmark (2) (*)
  • add bremsstrahlung transmission test versus EGS (2) (*)
  • development of electron line-shape test in sampling calorimeter (2) (*)

3) Further development of the processes of multiple and single scattering:

  • finalize multiple scattering move to AlongStep [GE] (1)
  • added lateral displacement option at boundary (1)
  • addition of next order corrections to the WentzelVI model (1)
  • review and fix of the Goudsmit-Saunderson model (2) (*)

4) Further update of ionization processes:

  • improve Urban fluctuation models (1)
  • perform study on alternative fluctuation models (1/2)
  • refinement of Birks effect helper class interface (1) [HAD]
  • refinement of effective ion charge approach (1)
  • study on accuracy of range simulation for therapevtic beams (2)
  • alternative ion ionisation models for moderate energies (2) (*)

5) Bremsstrahlung and gamma models:

  • improved parameterisation for positron cross section (2) (*)
  • update Compton scattering model adding radiative corrections (2) (*)
  • update gamma conversion model below 10 MeV (2) (*)
  • feasibility study on the new model for e+e- pair production by e- and e+ (2) (*)

6) EM infrastructure update:

  • Maintenance of EM physics builders
  • Opt0 - ATLAS, ALICE
  • Opt1 - CMS
  • Opt2 - LHCb
  • Opt3 - HEP R&D, space, medical and other applications
  • Opt4 - the most accurate combination of standard/low-energy for HEP R&D, space, medical and other applications
  • range computation in G4EmCalculator (*)

7) Improvements in high energy processes

  • improved cross section for photo-nuclear production by muons (2)
  • migration of mu+mu- production to model design (2) (*)
  • Extended TestEm6 to have validation on cross sections and final state for rare high energy processes (2) (*)

8) Optical photon physics

  • Extension to the unified surface model to have both specular and diffuse components for the transmitted photons (2)
  • Modeling of optical transport in a volume that has different optical treatments on different sides (2)
